According to data published by the National Bureau of Statistics and Information (ONEI) in 2013 there were 32,848 divorces, constituting 843 more than in 2012. Of all the separations, 10,689 marriages had been together for over 15 years

Any legal separations must be addressed by the family courts, especially if there are minor children. Such situations often include determining which parent will have custody of the children and who should pay his child support.

"The obligation to pay the pension should do it or not even if the employment relationship, even if you received the new forms of economic management (Autonomous), for it has enabled the relevant mechanisms," said attorney Janet Collective Law Manso.

The divorce was officially established in Cuba in 1917 and since then the rates remained at "paltry" values, until in 1963 for the first time surpassed the barrier of one for every 1,000 inhabitants. Its index almost tripled in recent decades to reach a rate of 64 per 100 marriages in 2009, according to official data.

One of the reasons for insisting specialists to assess the trend in Cuban society is to consider the economic independence of women on their husbands facilitates end unsatisfactory marriages.

In light of this, the island abound in female-headed households and small families, where the mother is only present with their dependent children.
