The 5th International Convention of Physical Activity and Sport, AFIDE-2013, will open today with a cultural gala dedicated to children and the elderly, at the Lazaro Peña Theater in Havana.

The general convention, which will receive more than 620 domestic and foreign participants, will begin tomorrow at the Conference Center in Havana, attended by delegates from 44 nations.

Among the main objectives of the scientific meeting is to foster exchange, promotion and dissemination of scientific experience and research in physical education and sports.

At the opening session, AFIDE-2013 proposes three master lectures, one by Dr. Antonio Becali, rector of the "Manuel Fajardo" University for Physical Culture and Sports Science.

Dr. Rodrigo Alvarez Cambras, director of the "Frank Pais" Orthopedic Science Complex, and Ivan Roman, Doctor in Cuban Sports Sciences, will also speak at the event.

Some 29 main conferences, 18 of which correspond to the hosts of the event and 11 to visitors, 10 panels of experts, and three roundtable discussions, will be held between tomorrow and Friday.

A total of 367 papers will be discussed during the four days of activities, 150 of which correspond to foreign specialists and 270 to Cuban experts.
