Iranian President-elect Hassan Rouhani underlined the need for the consolidation of the friendly ties between Tehran and Havana.

Rouhani raised the issue in a message sent to Cuban President Raul Castro in response to his congratulatory message.

“I believe Iran-Cuba good relations will further expand in the interest of the two countries’ great nations,” the Iranian president-elect said.

Iran has sought to expand ties and cooperation with Latin America, specially since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ascended to power eight years ago.

In line with the same policy, President Ahmadinejad has gone on several official trips to major Latin American countries, including Brazil, Cuba, Bolivia and Venezuela.

During his visits, Ahmadinejad has signed a number of agreements with the leaders of Latin America in a bid to strengthen Iran's foothold in South America.
