Cuba will begin digital television tests in some areas of the capital in June, to progressively introduce this service in the country, national media reports today.

The implementation of these tests allows for testing signal transmission and reception in television viewers' homes in real conditions, Granma newspaper said.

"The demonstration area will enable the adaptation of technical, economic and organizational measures to subsequently continue the gradual deployment of digital TV in other regions of the country, according to economic possibilities," it added.

For the transmission of digital signals, the country will use the Chinese Digital Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcasting standard or DTMB.

In this sense, decoder boxes will be distributed in selected neighborhoods, to allow receiving and display digital signals on current television sets.
