Tour operators, travel agents, airlines, specially invited guests, and trade press will attend the opening today of the main Cuban tourism fair, FITCuba-2013 here in this beach resort.

The fair, continuing until May 11, where sun and beach tourism converge, is returning to the Plaza America Conference Center in this famous Varadero Beach, some 140 kilometers east of Havana, after eight years of absence.

Lectures by Cuban Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero, and his Brazilian peer Gastao Dias Vieira, whose country is participating in this Fair as a guest with a large delegation, are included in the agenda of activities for this first day.

Also on the list is Carlos Vogeler, representative to the Americas for the World Tourism Organization, who said that FITCuba as an event has acquired increasing importance and strength as a point of reference for the region.

Another important issue today is the declaration of Casa de Las Americas "Xanadu Mansion" as a National Monument, located at a place known as Las Peñas de San Bernardino.

Varadero, the top Cuban beach resort, closed 2012 at number 10 among the top 25 best beach destinations worldwide according to Tripadvisor, a leading online travel website.
