The distinguished National Book Award was won this year by the renowned storyteller, critic and essayist Leonardo Padura, one of the most widely read and admired Cuban writers on and off the the island today.

According to the Prensa Latina news agency, the jury reviewed 18 proposals submitted by literary institutions from across the country and agreed to recognize the distinguished journalist, screenwriter and author of El hombre que amaba a los perros (The Man Who Loved Dogs).

This is the most important award of its kind on the island, which is given annually and recognizes those writers who have enriched the legacy of Cuban literature.

The award ceremony will be held during the 22nd International Book Fair of Havana, scheduled from February 14 to 24 next year in the capital.
