China dispatched a cargo aircraft with 90 tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba to help people who lost their homes when Hurricane Sandy devastated the region in late October.

According to the official Xinhua news agency, the plane was scheduled to arrive Wednesday about 3 a.m. in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, one of the most heavily affected by the storm.

The aid shipment includes 900 tents, 10,000 blankets, 30 water purification systems, 100 electric generators and assorted medicines.

China offered financial support to Cuba to combat the immediate results of Sandy after the hurricane lashed the island.

Sandy brought its destruction to eastern Cuba on the morning of Oct. 25, killing 11 people, damaging and destroying thousands of homes, causing huge losses to agriculture and heavy economic damage, although a definitive tally of the damage has not yet been rendered by the Cuban government.

Santiago de Cuba and the neighboring province of Holguin were the ones most heavily impacted by the second storm to hit the island during the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, which will officially end on Nov. 30.
