The Cuban Council of State on Thursday called for general elections in October, Communist party’s official newspaper Granma informed.

An official statement published by Granma said that in conformity with the Cuban Constitution and the Electoral Law of 29 October 1992, the Council of State agreed to call on the voters of the Republic to general elections, which include the voting of delegates to municipal and provincial People’s Power assemblies, and the deputies of the National Assembly (Parliament).

The election of municipal assembly delegates for a two-and-a-half-year term will be held Sunday October 21, 2012, with a prospective runoff scheduled for Sunday October 28 in those electoral districts where none of the candidates reaches more than 50 percent of the valid votes.

The date of the elections of provincial assembly delegates and Parliament deputies for a five- year term will be announced later, reads the note.
