Heavy rains have caused serious flooding in Cuba’s central territory, two people have been reported as missing, while hundreds of others have been evacuated by local authorities.

Cuba’s National Center of Civil Defense has called on the population and pertinent authorities to increase vigilance and security measures in the face of the heavy rainfall that has hit most of the country in the last 24 hours.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology, rains have affected most of the national territory from Matanzas to Santiago de Cuba, including Isle of Youth, being particularly intense in the central province of Sancti Spiritus, where over 500 millimeters of rainfall were reported.

Life-threatening floods have also caused economic damage and interruptions of fixed communication systems. There are also two missing persons Alain Manaud, a french citizen and y Silvestre Fortún Álvarez Lorenzo, from Cabaiguán.
