Cuban musician Chucho Valdes and his band The Afro-Cuban Messengers won the Extraordinary Award of the International Festival Cubadisco 2012 for the CD Chucho´s Steps, of the record label Colibri.

Also distinguished in 2011 with a Latin Grammy for best Latin jazz album, the record is composed by eight songs, including Zawinul's Mambo, Danzon and another dedicated to the city of New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz.

The festival Cubadisco 2012, which opened Monday with his gala winners in Havana's Karl Marx Theater, conceded the Grand Prix to pianist Ernan Lopez-Nussa for his phonogram Twenty Pianos.

I see this album as the beginning of a new phase in my life, more linked to the teaching, instruction, and the fervent desire for a better understanding for all, of the music, the art of life, said the artist to the press after receiving the prize.

Special awards went to Jose Luis Cortes, for his CD, My 22 Years, Egrem Record Label, and producer Ricardo Leyva for his work in 30 years of Son 14, orchestra led by Adalberto Alvarez.

The CD Sueños del pequeño, Colibri Record Label, by Joaquin Betancourt and the young Jazz completed the list of special laurels.
