A final year Guyanese medical student in Cuba on Friday allegedly killed a Cuban in a house during an altercation, a senior government official confirmed Saturday.

Public Service Minister, Dr. Jennifer Westford said her office was trying to confirm the identity of the suspect who is the custody of Cuban police.

She explained that two Guyanese have the same names and are a studying in Havana. It is important for authorities to first confirm which one of them allegedly committed the act before his parents are informed, she said. “We are trying to verify the name before contacting the parents,” she told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com)

Other sources have told demwaves.com that the Cuban man’s wife throat was also slashed and she was clinging to life.

Details of the circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown because, according to Westford, Cuban authorities would first have to transmit a detailed report through the official channels.

The Public Service Minister said preliminary information reaching her office indicates that the Guyanese student might have had an accomplice whose nationality is unknown.

She said the Guyana government would be prepared to offer assistance to the Guyanese detainee.  “He is going to have to go through the legal system and see what happens and we will be prepared to provide whatever legal assistance may be required,” she said.

This is the first time that a Guyanese student studying in Cuba has been implicated in a homicide.

Several years ago, a Guyanese student was involved in a road accident on the Spanish-speaking Caribbean island.

After the intervention by Guyanese authorities, he was allowed to complete his studies and serve his sentence. He returned to Guyana last week.
