From the February 28, 1983 the Center Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art collects and disseminates much of the work of Cuban painter whose name it bears. The center also works for the development and promotion of modern visual arts of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Since its foundation has maintained interest in the development of different manifestations of the visual arts: painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, installation, drawing, video art, architecture, folk art performances, and also to showcase everything related to the circulation and reception of these creations within and outside the context of the Third World.

Its main task is the organization of the Biennial of Havana, and large event with the participation of artists from all latitudes since its premiere in 1984.

Similarly, the institution has a valuable collection that exceeds 250 thousand works of art in its permanent collection. These funds are enriched from donations by artists and by buying from institutions and creators, and the winners in each event, then exposed parts inside and outside Cuba.

In addition to its extensive bibliographic and documentary heritage on contemporary visual arts, the Center hosts lecture series and exhibitions specialized national and international artists in spacious showrooms, conference room and areas for cultural activities.

The facility is located in the building that was in the eighteenth century mansion of the Counts of Peñalver, in Stonehouse Street and San Ignacio, so is close to the Bodeguita del Medio and the Cathedral Square in Havana Old enough reasons as stated by Heritage.

The existence of this institution is a perpetual homage to Wifredo Lam, who put his brush with global best of Cuban visual arts of the twentieth century.
