The Environment is one of the main problems of XXI century, its preservation is a priority task in the world. As part of measures aimed at their protection will be held today from VIII International Symposium Wetlands 2011 in Matanzas, Cuba. Specialists from 13 Latin American and European nations participating in the event which will be held until Friday in the Cienaga de Zapata, largest wetland in the Caribbean islands and Biosphere Reserve.

Regional initiatives for the conservation of wetland ecosystems and corresponding strategies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, are included in the scientific agenda of the forum sponsored by the Territorial Delegation of Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of the province.

Also participating, the National Center for Protected Areas and the Information Center, Environmental Management and Education.

Zapata Swamp, a major place of refuge for more than 160 species of migratory birds and other native Cuban crocodiles, jutías dwarfs, and other endemic animals, has an area of ​​about four thousand 300 square kilometers, of which 600 thousand are bogs.
