The Carbonera Club near the beach resort town of Varadero is one of four golf course community projects to be announced soon. Former British pro Tony Jacklin agreed to design the golf course at the planned Carbonera Club, Esencia Group announced in a press release.

The London-based developers, which formed a joined venture with state company Grupo Palmares, are in the final stages of negotiations with the Cuban government over construction of a golf course community with homes for sale to foreigners.

The Carbonera Club near the beach resort town of Varadero is one of four golf course community projects to be announced soon.

In addition to assisting in the design of an 18-hole championship course, there will also be a Tony Jacklin Golf Academy at the resort.

Jacklin, a British and U.S. Open champion and captain of the European Ryder Cup team, first visited the island in April as guest of honor of the Esencia-sponsored Montecristo Cup in Varadero.

“Cuba is an ideal location for golf tournaments and has a bright future with regard to courses,” Jacklin said during the tournament. “Where else can you light up a cigar and strike the ball?”
