Havana, Cuba.-  Following the island's effort to reduce the purchasing of food abroad the local industry is assuming new challenges with the planning process of two enterprises to be used in the food sphere. These works will finally enable the replacement of importation of provisions bought overseas that have a high demand in the national market.

The food canning factory located in the Caujerí valley in Guantánamo province and another powdered milk factory in Camagüey province constitute the current plans in which engineers of the Design and Engineering enterprise are working on. The technological lines to be used for the execution of both projects have been acquired in Italy and China, respectively.

Aníbal Pérez Bolaños, director of a branch that belongs to abovementioned enterprise, pointed out that the institution has always been in the vanguard of the sector since more than 30 years ago to stimulate the development of the industry in the food sphere.

The enterprise has made projects on important industries of the nation such as the Tiníma and Mayabe beer industry, the citrus complex enterprises located in Jaguey Grande and Ceballos, respectively, as well as the rum factory located in Santa Cruz, the abattoirs located in Nueva Paz, Matanzas and Villa Clara provinces and the cocoa processing factory in Cienfuegos province of which its works has been temporarily detained.

Pérez Bolaño also added “just a few time ago, we were hired by the Antex enterprise that belongs to the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) to executing two projects about a bakery and an ice cream and yogurt factory in the Popular Republic of Angola which are currently under a continuous exploitation. Moreover, we carried out not only the design and assembly process but also the direction and the execution of the works.”

The enterprise has the possibility to work in other projects overseas where there have been proposals for an ice cream factory in China, another one of cacao in Venezuela and some abattoirs in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

One of the most problematic issues of the institution is the absence of professional replacements given that 57 years old is the current age average in there. Therefore, graduations in specialties such as Engineering and Architecture are still insufficient taking into account the current demand in different institutes linked to this type of work. Pérez Bolaño highlighted.

Branches of the Design and Engineering enterprise that are designed for the line of production include the Refrigeration enterprise, Mechanic Productions enterprise, Design and Engineering Services enterprise, Automated Systems enterprise, MINAL services and the Importation enterprise and Exportation ALIMPEX  enterprise, in that order.

Regarding the investment process in Cuba, Bolaño sated that specialists should apply what is legislated in the 91 resolution of the year 2006 which are instructions to be used in the investment process. There are some occasions in which is violated what is established given the short planning time for the execution of a work or the lack of technical professionalism and proper equipment.

The work of these artists of design and architecture contribute to strengthen the industry sphere taking into account their work during the last decades. At present time, the commitment is even higher given the fact that the food sphere has become a national security issue in view of the rising of the prices of food in the international market.
