Cuba's participation at World Boxing Championship not as expected

2011.09.30/ radiorebelde.icrt.cu.  Defending world champion Rosniel Iglesias lost a tight fight against Ukrainian Denys Berinchyk, and Cuba saw his winning streak ended at six, in the Baku 2011 World Boxing Championship. Cuba Sees Winning Streak at World Boxing Championship Broken.

Iglesias was the favourite to retain his title in the light welterweight division but after the board showed a 19-19 tie in the score the acting judges awarded Berinchyk with the victory.

According to sources from the Cuban delegation the Cuban lost the first round 5-6, then in the second he finished with a 14-13 lead, but accepted the close combat proposed by his opponent who managed to tie the score.

It was a hard blow for the Cuban delegation which saw Iglesias as its best chance to win a gold in this event, plus a ticket to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Now Iglesias will have to clinch his spot in the coming Pan American Games, to be held in October in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Saturday Oct the first, Cuba will have two representatives fighting: Middleweight Emilio Correa against Indian Vijender Kumar and lightweight Yasniel Toledo will face Mexican Angel Gutierrez.(ACN)
