Contemporary Paintings from Eastern Cuba

This was the longest touring collection of original paintings from Eastern Cuba ever to tour the US.

"Art was the first written language of all people and continues to communicate across all barriers, old and new," says Clyde Hensley.

"Our humanitarian aid work in Cuba has been a person to person program for all these years. From supplies to the small schools in the outback of the Sierra Maestra to the hundreds of pairs of reading glasses in Santiago de Cuba is just a part of our involvement with the people of the region. When I discovered this talented group of artists of this eastern region, I found that they had no access to any art supplies, besides the unsustainable materials they were using.

I would say that 99% of all art materials available in Cuba back then, in the early 1990s, never made it outside of Havana. Not many folks supporting the arts from abroad even knew of Oriente, they kept to Havana. We have been focused on Eastern Cuba for all this time and it shows. We have brought the best canvases, (probably a linear mile or so), as well as brushes, oils, etc. to the region. The artists always share what they have with other artists, that's a real good thing when you realize there isn't much there, in the material sense that is."

The Documentary "LUMINOUS SHADOWS, THE ARTISTS OF EASTERN CUBA" came out in 2008 and was nominated for awards Nationally and Internationally as well as being aired by PBS station KTWU and others. This documentary shares a rare and inspiring view into the lives of these artists of the region. A copy of the film goes out with each painting.
