2011.09.08 - 19:34:24 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Artemisa, Cuba.- The penetration of the sea due to climatic conditions have provoked the disappearance of three beaches south of the province of Artemisa, according to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.

Jacinto Ivan Gonzalez, resident of the region told the press that Caijío, Guanímar and Majana are now coastal areas with grass under water and the small umbrellas made out of palm leafs constructed 30 meters from the shore are currently under water.

During the erosion period human actions were also involved, like the extraction of sand, construction of homes along the coast and the indiscriminate cutting of mangrove areas, said Rafael Arcis, specialist from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.

Among the natural causes are the characteristics of the soil that stopped the development of barriers that break the waves and the location of the territory over a wide and dangerous area of the platform.

According to the specialist, it is estimated that the coastal line will decrease over a meter in several parts of the area each year.

There have been reports of up to 25 meters of sea penetration affecting the population in the region.

Rafael Arcis insisted in the need to avoid dumping residues and constructing close to the beaches, while pointing out that any danger to nature will reflect negatively on the country´s economic and social sectors.(ACN)
