2011.09.01 - 10:37:25 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Cuba Faces Mexico in Quarterfinals of Men’s NORCECA Championship of VolleyballHAVANA, CUBA.-  Cuba lost on Wednesday to the United States 1-3 (24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 25-17) and missed the opportunity to advance directly to the semifinals of the Men’s North, Central American and Caribbean (NORCECA) Volleyball Championship that is under way in the Puerto Rican city of Mayaguez.

The top-eight teams of the region are taking part in the competition that will qualify the winner to the Volleyball World Cup to take place in Japan in November, the first step in the qualification process for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Teams were divided in two groups. Pool A included host country Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico and St. Lucia, while Pool B consisted of defending champions Cuba, along with United States, Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica.

As a result of Wednesday’s setback, Cuba finished second in Pool B and they face Mexico on Thursday looking for one of the two semifinal spots still up for grabs.

Canada also secured a semifinal berth topping Pool A, while Puerto Rico and Trinidad & Tobago will play for the other ticket for the semifinal stage.(ACN)
