Cuba’s Dominguez and Bruzon Advance to Second Round of World Chess CupHAVANA, CUBA.-  Although in different styles, Cuban Grand Masters (GM) Leinier Dominguez and Lazaro Bruzon advanced to the second round of the World Chess Cup that is under way in the Russian city of Khanty-Mansiysk.

Dominguez, the best Latin American player with an ELO rating of 2,719 points, beat Iranian Elshan Moradiabadi (2,532) 1.5-0.5 as a result of a win and a draw in their two classical matches.

Meanwhile, after two ties in his classical games against compatriot GM Yuniesky Quesada, Bruzon managed to prevail 3.5-2.5 with a victory in the last of their 4-game rapid play-off on Tuesday.

Three other Cuban players were eliminated in the first round of the competition. GM Fidel Corrales (2,585) lost to Hungarian GM Judith Polgar (2,699), GM Isam Ortiz (2,556) was defeated by Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi (2,711); and GM Frank de la Paz (2,477) lost to Azerbaijan’s Teimour Radjabov (2,744).

In the first of his 2-game second round classical matches on Wednesday, Dominguez will face Moldovan GM Viktor Bologan (2,678), who defeated Polish GM Bartosz Socko (2,631) in the first round.

In some surprising first-round results, Hungarian GM Peter Leko (2,717) was downed by American GM Samuel Shankland (2,539), while Chinese GM Yue Wang (2,709) fell to Brazilian GM Alexandr Fier (2,566).

A total of 128 players from 46 countries entered the 2011 World Chess Cup final. The first three finishers get tickets to the Candidates tournament in the next World Championship cycle.(ACN)
