By: Tomas Armenteros Crespo. 09:23Seoul, Aug 28 (Prensa Latina) Cuban male decathlon athlete Leonel Suarez and female discus thrower Yarelis Barrios have won the first two medals for Cuba (bronze) at the World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea, Sunday.

Suarez was once again at the awarding podium, now with a total of 8,501 points, behind the US athletes Ashton Eaton (8,505, second place) and Trey Hardee (8,607, first place and champion).

At the last event of the competition, the 1,500 meters, Leonel Suarez finished second, with 4:24.16, defeated by Ashton Eaton (4:18.94).

With a throw of 65.73 meters in her third attempt, Yarelis Barrios secured the bronze medal in the women's discus throwing competition, maintaining her ranking among the world's best athletes.

Barrios was beaten by German Nadine Muller, who threw 65.97 meters to win gold, and Chinese Yanfeng Li (66.52) who placed second.

Yanfeng Li (born on May 15, 1979) was heading the world list of the event with a throw of 67.98 on June 5 in Schonebeck.

The surprise of the day was the disqualification of the Olympic Champion and recordman in the 100-flat meter event, Usain Bolt (Jamaica) due to a false start.

In his absence, the winner was his fellow countryman Yohan Blake with a time of 9.92 seconds.
