Havana, Cuba.- Cuban Yarelis Barrios, Beijing 2008 Olympic discus throw runner-up (women), qualified for the finals in the opening day of the 13th IAAF World Championships underway in Daegou, South Korea, thru Sept 4.

Barrio, who was also second in Berlin 2009 world championships, made a 63,80m throw in her first attempt, breaking the qualification mark (62 m) and securing a place in the competition’s finals scheduled for Sunday.

Barrios’ best throw for this year is 65.44 meters. She is the Cuba’s trump card for this event and for the Pan American Games of Guadalajara to take place in October.

Her team mate Dania Caballero made a 60, 36 meters throw, but although she left behind the minimum mark she managed to be among the finalists, along with Dragma Tomasevic (SRB-60.45) and Dani Samuels (AUS-60.45), who did not meet the qualifying distance.

Leading the finalist list is Sandra Muller (GER-65.54 meters), Jian Tan (CHN-62.26), Zinaida Sendruite (LTU-61.72), according to the championships’ website.

In related news, Kenya swept the board in both women’s marathon and 10000m race. The first event was led by Edna Kiplagat (2:28:43 hrs), who won the first gold medal in this championships; she was escorted by her fellow country women Priscah Jeptoo (2:29.00) and Sharon Cherop (2:29.14).

Later in the day, the Kenyan runners finished 1-2-3-4 led by Vivian Cheruiyot in the 10000m race.(ACN)
