First Medal for Cuba at World Judo Championships

2011.08.26 - 14:03:50 /radiorebelde.icrt.cu. HAVANA, CUBA.-  Asley Gonzalez gave Cuba its first medal on Friday during the fourth day of competitions of the World Judo Championships, under way in Paris, France.

Gonzalez beat Russian Kirill Denison by Yuko in the bronze medal bout of the men’s 90-kilo division to secure Cuba’s first medal in this competition. On his way to the bronze, Gonzalez defeated Polish Krzystof Welglarz and Uzbekistan’s Dilshod Choriev, before he lost to Japanese Daiki Nishiyama. Then, in the repechage, the Cuban judoka downed Ukrainian Valentyn Grekov to advance to the bout against Denison.

As to the other Cuban competitors on Friday, Onix Cortes (women’s 70 kg) finished in the fifth spot while Yalennis Castillo (women’s 78 kg) and Kaliema Antomachin (women’s 78 kg), were both eliminated in their second outings.

Japan tops the medal standings with five crowns, six silver and three bronze medals, followed by France (3-0-1) and South Korea (1-0-1). The other countries with at least a title are Uzbekistan (1-0-1) and Greece (1-0-0).

The individual competition concludes on Saturday and the Team event will take place on Sunday.(ACN)
