2011.08.23 - 10:28:44 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Guanahacabibes National park The Guanahacabibes National park is the central area of the Biosphere Reserve with the same name contained in some 40 thousand hectares in the western province of Cuba.

Its exceptional beauty includes 15 950 hectares of marine territory in the southern coast, characterized by its rocky land.

The region stands out for its valuable slopes measuring some 20 meters above sea level with a number of white sand beaches and inlets which are very peculiar.

Abundant lagoons and mangroves are found in the swampy areas to the north.

According to specialists of the National Center of Protected Areas the picturesque areas are relevant in the region and world in general.

One of the most significant is the forest that grows above the rocky land as well as the coastal vegetation.  This region treasures 730 land flora species, 20 percent of which are endemic.

The Park´s land fauna are made up of 16 types of amphibian, 35 reptile, 192 birds and 18 mammal groups among others.

The forest is a refuge to 9 of the 22 bird endemic bird species on the island: zunzuncito, tocororo, green woodpecker among others.  Its migratory corridor is used by over 50 different bird species.

In the case of the reptiles, there are exclusive endemic sub species: two types of lizards, iguana, the majá of Santa Maria and the American crocodile.

There is a narrow marine platform with a unique terrace shape in form of a wall with small balconies.

Such structure includes tunnels representing an abundant refuge and favors the diversity of the marine life.

However, the largest treasure of the Park is hidden under its waters: coral reefs that stands out for its architectural power and a variety of forms of life.

The installation contains a large archeological richness thanks to the number of indigenous artifacts and the colonial time that are witness to the work of the Guanahatabeyes, its primate population. By Lino Luben Perez. (ACN)
