Cuba Beats France in Debut at FIVB’s Boys’ Youth World ChampionshipHAVANA, CUBA.-  Cuba defeated France (25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 25-21) in their debut at the International Volleyball Federation’s (FIVB) Boys’ Youth World Championship that began on Friday in Argentina.

According to the website of the event, the Cuban attack was led by Yordan Bisset with 16 points while Danger Quintana and Lazaro Fundora contributed 15 and 14 units, respectively, to the winners’ cause. Thibault Rossard led the French with a game-high 18 points.

Cuba is playing in Pool C in the first preliminary round accompanied by Brazil, South Korea, and France, in the city of Almirante Brown.

The Caribbean squad will take on Brazil on Saturday, and South Korea, on Sunday.

Also participating in the contest are the United States, Egypt, Argentina and Bulgaria (Pool A); Russia, Greece, Tunisia and China (Pool B); and Serbia, Puerto Rico, Iran and Spain (Pool D).

In other results on Friday, Brazil edged South Korea 3-2 (25-19, 25-14, 23-25, 20-25, 15-9), defending champions Serbia blanked Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-20), and Spain downed Iran, also in straight sets (25-22, 27-25, 25-21).

The previous similar tournament in 2009 was won by Serbia, followed by Iran and Argentina.

Brazil has six titles (1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 2001, 2003) while Russia has two (2005, 1999). Italy (1997), Iran (2007) and Serbia (2009) have one crown apiece.(ACN)
