By Claudia Pis Guirola. “My sons used to be very introverted; it was difficult for them to speak in public. Their entrance in Vocal Clave de Sol changes their life”, said Jesús Reyes, father of two members of this orchestra made by amateurs.

This project, directed by the instructors Yamilé and Nuria García and which have two years foundation, shows human potentials of the inner and outer expressions of the neighborhood.

“Our main objective is to interpret a repertoire composed by Cuban and Latin American music and to develop in the children their instrumental and vocal abilities”, explained Nuria García, musical director.

Even though the children might not know about music, starting from their knowledge of the melodies, it is easy to take them to the instrument. To teach, teachers use a practical system created by Clara Romero de Nicola, which consist in the use of a rhythmical phrase, in learning how a rhythm sounds and play it.

Yamilé García, general director clarifies: “We do not intend all these children to become musicians, but better people. We work with Spanish language, history, teaching them the date of the creation of a play, elements of the life of the author, genres, the context of its creation. We try to boost always the development of human values, through team work.

Rocío Almeida, one of the members of the orchestra, with only seven years, tells: “I learned to play several songs of the Cuban and classic music. Here I met new friends and I like the instrument, percussion, as well as singing. When I grow up, I want to become a guitar player”.

Community culture, sometimes not given its full weight, gives artistic and human fruits of great quality in a society always eager of good music, painting or dance, as ours.

Parents of the children linked to the project thank the artistic notions their children are obtaining in it, but also the human and emotional changes they can already see in them from their entrance in Vocal Clave de Sol. They also highlight the rescue of tradition works of the Cuban music which were lost in the taste of the young people.

The grandmother Olga Lidia Prieto, while waiting the end of the rehearsals, had no doubt in commenting: “The study of guitar sweetened the soul of my grandchildren”.
