The ALBA Culture Center hosted the concert, sponsored by the Oswaldo Guayasamin Foundation in Ecuador.

That institution has previously celebrated what it called "the birthday of a man who has raised to the highest levels the values of dignity, sovereignty and international solidarity."

In his opening remarks, Pablo Guayasamin, son of famous late painter Oswaldo Guayasamin, said he was full of emotion and happiness for helping to make the event happen.

Uruguayan Daniel Viglietti, Argentine Raly Barrionuevo, Peruvian Marisela Perez, Chilean Francisco (Pancho) Villa, Paraguayan Ricardo Flecha, Bulgarian Yordanka Kristova, and the Cuban band Buena Fe attended the two-hour concert.

For Friday, the Guayasamin Foundation is preparing another concert, Serenata de la Fidelidad (Serenade of Fidelity) at Havana's Karl Marx Theater, on the eve of Fidel Castro's birthday, Aug. 13.
