12:47 AM, Aug 6, 2011. Tampa, Florida- For the first time in nearly 50 years, non-stop flights from Tampa to Havana, Cuba are on sale this week.

The flights are set to begin around the second weekend of September and will be operated by various carriers including American Airlines through independent charter companies.

The new service recently approved by the U.S. and Cuban governments gives those with roots in Cuba a more convenient option for traveling back to their home isla. Previously, those eligible to travel, had to take charter flights out of Miami. Only those born in Cuba, and who have immediate relatives there, or who are traveling with special permission as part of a religious, educational, or humanitarian group are eligible to fly.

The new Tampa flights will run each Thursday and Saturday mid-afternoon and cost around $450. Tickets can not be purchased on-line and are only available through authorized agents selected by the U.S. Government.

Todo Services out of St. Petersburg is one of those companies.

"We're very excited. It has been almost 50 years the Cuban Americans have been waiting for this moment," said company president Alex Ruiz.
