By: Ileana Ferrer Fonte. martes, 02 de agosto de 2011. 09:48San Juan, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) Governor Luis Fortuño announced Monday night the shutdown of all state offices except for those essential in case of emergency, as Tropical Storm Emily passes near Puerto Rico.

Emily, located about 250 miles south of this Caribbean island, also led the government to decree a price freeze for basic products, including gasoline.

Fortuño stated that the country had set up some 370 shelters with 26,000 cots and that the facilities, mostly schools, had been stocked with food and water, and that priority would be given to sick people who needed to be moved from the eastern island municipalities of Vieques and Culebra.

The government also activated 1,100 firefighters and 100 water trucks, as levels of many dams were reduced.

The storm was south of Puerto Rico toward the Dominican Republic.
