2011.07.22 - 16:42:03 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. SANTIAGO DE CUBA.- The benefits of natural and traditional medicine in Cuba were presented during the Fourth International Conference on Psychology concluding Friday in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba.

Doctor Jesus Angel Quintero specialist on the field said traditional medicine is effectively used in patients who are allergic to anesthesia, and as an alternative post-operation sedative. For those purposes it is used in 10 percent of major surgeries performed in the country.

Dr. Quintero, who works at the Infantil Sur Pediatric Hospital of Santiago de Cuba, said traditional medicine has been successfully introduced in all levels of the Cuban National Health System.

He told the more than 100 delegates present in the meeting that natural and traditional medicine is an important tool to provide healthier medical assistance, and encourage its use.

The doctor recommended specifically the use of apitherapy (medical use of bee honey), phytotherapy, acupuncture, medical hydrology, homeopathy and floral therapy, noting that all of them have been practiced for centuries in the world and have been scientifically validated for their capacity to fix many health problems without harming the organism.

In Cuba, natural and traditional medicine is used in all levels of medical assistance, but especially in rehab centers, family doctor’s offices, hospitals and other institutions, Dr. Quintero said, and added that feedback on experiences of such use is very important in spreading its benefits.

By means of the Center for State Control of Medicine Quality, Cuban health authorities are working to establish sanitary regulations for products and procedures used in this medical specialty. (ACN)
