The opening ceremony of the sports event, which combines high performance and the principles of fraternity and Latin American and Caribbean integration, will take place in the western city of Barquisimeto, in the state of Lara.

The ALBA Games are taking place shortly before the Pan-American Games, set for October in Guadalajara, Mexico, making it a good opportunity to assess athletes' performances.

Once again, the largest delegations attending the ALBA Games are Cuba (344 members) and Venezuela (801).

The 5th ALBA Games in 2013 will be held in Ecuador.

Cuba brought its best athletes to Venezuela, including 90 percent of more than 300 athletes who qualified for the Guadalajara Games, the president of the Cuban Sports Institute, Christian Jimenez, told Prensa Latina.

The Venezuelan deputy minister for high performance sports, Yuri Quiñones, predicted high-level games with tough rivalry in several sports.

The competitions will take place in 31 facilities that were remodeled and upgraded, Quiñones told Prensa Latina.

The games of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) will close on July 30.
