HAVANA, Cuba.- Progress is being made on the building of a new bridge linking two of the keys off north Ciego de Avila. The engineering structure is expected to facilitate the tourist development of the eastern part of the Jardines del Rey resort.

The six-lane, 125 meter-long viaduct named La Pasa will allow to speed up the development of the eastern part of the Jardines del Rey resort by facilitating fast access from both Cayo Coco and Cayo Romano to Paredon Grande, which is included in the master development plan of the area, Granma daily reported Tuesday.

Workers with the national construction company ECOING-27 have placed the first eight beams which are 20M long and weight more than 23 tons. The beams were manufactured by the state-run Industrial Production Enterprise based in Cayo Coco, thus reducing costs of the project.

Civil engineer Elizabeth Fernandez Gonzalez said within the next few days, other eight beams will be placed, while pre-fabricated tiles will be laid and rails will be fixed.

Valued at more than $1 million, the viaduct will replace a swing bridge that never completed, so it has to be partly demolished to start over the works.

Four bridges along the Turiguano-Cayo Coco causeway were repaired and other two are on different repair stages as part of an investment program aimed at rescuing those structures which are submitted to constant traffic and are worn away by the sea. (ACN)
