Friday 08 July 2011. Cuba Solidarity campaigners welcomed a formal agreement signed between Britain and Cuba to strengthen bilateral co-operation as a "significant first step" towards respecting the socialist country's sovereignty today.

Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) director Rob Miller said that the agreement was the result of vigorous campaigning by the group and affiliated trade unions for Britain to "break from the 'EU common position' which has imposed restrictions on relations between member states and Cuba since 1996."

He added: "We have consistently called for a policy based on respect for Cuba's sovereignty and independence. This declaration is a significant first step in this direction."

Baroness Angela Smith, chairwoman of the all-party group on Cuba and CSC vice-chairwoman, added: "I very much hope we can now begin to see real practical steps to increase levels of trade and exchange."
