2011.07.06 - 17:48:52 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. HAVANA, Cuba.- An essay about Cuban prima ballerina Alicia Alonso titled "Una luz distinta y más alta" (A Different, Higher Light) by Juan Marinello, one of the most relevant figures in the Cuban culture, will be presented on July 7 at the Juan Marinello Cultural Research Institute Center, in Havana.

Published for the first time as an autonomous edition by the center where the presentation will take place, this work is considered of extraordinary value for ballet lovers and fans of prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso.

The essay, written by Marinello on the occasion of Alonso's success as a ballerina and choreographer at the Paris Opera, was first published in 1972 by Granma newspaper, and it was later reproduced by the “Cuba en el Ballet” magazine.

The new edition by Anette Jimenez Marata is based on the typed original, revised and with hand-written comments by the author himself.

The design and selection of illustrations was made by Ricardo Reymena, based on the work Cancion para la Extrana Flor (Song to an Odd Flower) by Cuban painter Mariano Rodriguez, a piece inspired by Alicia Alonso now included in the Collection of Cuba's National Museum of Dance.

Marinello (1898-1977) was a poet and essay writer and an active anti-imperialist political activist, for which he was forced to exile many times before the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.

In 1962, Marinello he was appointed rector of the University of Havana. He thoroughly studied Jose Marti’s work and wrote for different literary publications in Cuba and abroad. Likewise, he took different posts as representative of Cuba at UNESCO.
