Editorial: Southwest Florida International Airport taking off to Cuba

Posted July 3, 2011 at 6 a.m.This could be the start of something big.Southwest Florida International Airport has been named as one of a dozen additional U.S. airports for flights to and from Cuba.

The other 11 include Tampa and Fort Lauderdale; Miami International is already cleared along with Los Angeles (LAX) and New York City (JFK).

For now, the special designation includes flights for only humanitarian, religious and other special reasons.

Yet with Cuban land global politics and trade opportunities in flux, the Cuban connection would develop into a real impact in our area.

It could mean more business for the airport.

It could mean more access and convenience for Southwest Floridians with family or business ties to Cuba.

It could cut their travel time by two or three hours in each direction.

It would bring Southwest Florida within 40 minutes of air travel time to the island nation with such vast potential.

No doubt other potential positive impacts will emerge as we think though all this.

We like that federal officials are thinking ahead and recognizing the power and people of Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties.
