Simply taking a stand as she puts it, against Castro is not helping the situation. She speaks of the naivete of trusting "the Castro regime" when what is actually naive is trusting that if some sort of accident occurs, that by ignoring the experts who feel it is important to work with Cuba on this issue,that the US is in some sort of better position to deal with a response.

There seems to be no way that the extremists in Miami can stop the inevitable drilling, so at what point does the administration in Washington follow common sense? Oil companies are determined to suck every last drop of oil out of the earth and no politician is able to stop them.

In light of this, we should demand that every possible effort is made to make it as safe as it can be. We shouldn't be relying on the probablity that if something terrible were to occur that then, after the fact, we would change the rules to go and try to help.

Being proactive, not reactionary, is the best that we can do. Up until now we have maintained, foolishly, to not do our best and not be proactive. As the article states, we have successfully work with Cuba on some issues of common concern, this certainly is another issue that can be considered the same. Let's hope that brighter minds prevail.
