The Catholic Church, in cooperation with a private university in Spain, is offering a master’s course to Cubans for administration of small businesses and cooperatives.

Under economic reforms launched by Raúl Castro, the government has begun promoting “self-employment” and cooperativism.

Graduates of the program, jointly offered by the Archdiocesis of Havana’s Centro Cultural Padre Félix Varela and the Universidad Católica San Antonio of Murcia, Spain, are expected to “acquire advanced abilities and knowledge of business administration, with a special focus on small and midsize companies, micro-companies and cooperatives,” an announcement on the Website of independent publication Espacio Laical said Thursday.

The course, taught by Spanish and Cuban professors from September this year to July 2012, will be open to 40 participants, according to the announcement.

The Catholic Church is playing an increasingly important role as a mediator with the Cuban government.
