Wed Jun 22, 2011 11:37A. Cuban President Raul Castro has called for expansion of relations between Iran and Cuba in the face of “the capitalist world.”

“Iran has a special place among revolutionary nations and countries,” said Castro during a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, IRNA reported on Wednesday.

President Ahmadinejad, for his part, said that Tehran and Havana share “common views” on the challenges facing the world.

“The two countries aim to promote ideals and objectives of independent and revolutionary nations by forging sustainable ties and taking common stances,” he said.

The Iranian chief executive said the expansion of relations with Latin American countries, especially Cuba, is highly important for Iran, adding that it is “beneficial for freedom-seeking and revolutionary nations.”

After taking office in 2005, the Iranian president enhanced Iran's cooperation with many Latin American states, including Venezuela and Cuba.

The US has repeatedly voiced concern over Iran's growing influence in Latin America and its close ties with leaders in the region.
