Venezuela's Comptroller General Clodosbaldo Russián died on Monday in Havana, Cuba, confirmed Minister of Communication and Information Andrés Izarra on his Twitter account.

"Another great Venezuelan has passed away: honor and glory to Clodosbaldo Russián. Let us honor his memory. He was an example," Izarra posted on his Twitter account. The government issued a statement on Russián's death.

Officials of the Moral Council said that the Comptroller General died from a kidney failure.

Russián, 72, was hospitalized on April 22 in the intensive care unit (ICU) of La Trinidad Teaching Medical Center, after he suffered a stroke.

The Venezuelan official had a stroke during the Easter holiday, while he enjoyed a few days off in the town of Río Chico, in the northern state of Miranda.

He was appointed Comptroller General by the Constituent Assembly in 1999 and was ratified by the National Assembly in 2000 and 2007. He had previously served as comptroller of Caracas.

Russián had been criticized for banning a number of political leaders from running in recent elections. He accused them of being involved in administrative irregularities.
