Camagüey, June 18 - Workers of the Primero de Enero Basic Unit of Cooperative Production (UBPC), located in the municipality of Camagüey, are finalizing the season when the mango crop is at its highest, after having delivered more than 130 metric tonnes of this fruit to Ceballo processesing plant, in the neigboring province of Ciego de Avila.

This contribution helps the Cuban State to substitute imports, because the fruit which is delivered is healthy and suitable for the making of concentrated syrups, juices and fruit compotes, and eventually supplying the tourist sector, the hard currency stores and selling these products abroad.

Mariela San Jose Carbonell, chairwoman of the abovementioned UBPC and Member of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba in Camagüey, told this reporter that some measures have been taken to make better use of this season when there is a great amount of mangoes in the storage and classification buildings. For such a reason, they have improvised wide over-hanging eaves, where the fruits are placed and covered with fronds of coconut palms and rice hulls to prevent any kind of damage.

Likewise, the Primero de Enero UBPC has handed out about 60 metric tonnes of mangoes to diverse subsidiaries of Acopio (State-owned company that stockpiles and distributes fruits and vegetables), a portion of them to be sold to the population and another one to be processed at the factory El mambí, belonging to the local Empresa de Conservas y Vegetales.
