By Lemay Padron Oliveros. Cuban boxer Yosvany Veitia is full of hopes. His status as Cuba’s 49 kg champion has made him think about big things despite barely being 19 years old.

After easily winning the crown of his division at the recently concluded Giraldo Cordova Cardin International Tournament, Veitia took Cubasí to one side.

-What has changed for Veitia from one year to the other?

-It’s a year of more experience and solidity, that’s why my confidence in myself has increased, and that influences in every fight.

-Has your preparation been better with regard to other competitions?

-No, I don’t think so, I always prepare myself very well for all tournaments, maybe when I become a recognized figure I will settle down, I don’t know, but the the time being it does not happen to me.

-You have a big challenge this year, because in addition to the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, which you are already qualified to, you will compete at the World Championship, qualifier for the 2012 London Olympic Games…

-I aspire to clinch medals in the two; I have just achieved the best result in my career in a strong tournament, so I don’t fear to seek important things.

-My spot for the World Championship isn’t secure yet, Daniel Matellon is competing for it too, what do you think about him?

-He has more experience because he was already at the previous World Championship, but the duel between us is 3-2 in my favor and I feel more secure and confident now, I hope to continue winning in order to go to the two events. Head coach Rolando Acebal is confident in me and I am not going to disappoint him. I lost to Ecuadorian Carlos Quipo, 5-8, at the Pan American Qualifier, but I can defeat him too, I just need to face boxers from other continents.

Finally, with regard to his weight he assured that he feels well and that it allows him to move comfortably. His words were fully endorsed by the Cardin, where his elegant boxing allowed us see his possibilities to achieve important victories if he continues that way. Of course, it’s very hard to predict the future, but watching him on the ring we can just share his hopes.
