By Ramon Brizuela Roque. Authorities and specialists have granted a time of ten years to the municipality of Viñales to reaffirm its identity, to strengthen its economic development, to improve the life conditions of the population and the preservation of their heritage.

Viñales is the only spot in Pinar del Rio that has been regarded as National Monument, Cultural Landscape of Mankind, National Park and at the same time a tourist resort.

For that recovery Project, it has been taken into account the progressive loss of the vegetation in the historic spot and in the new neighbourhoods, as well as a gradual deterioration of the image of the settlement that is promoted as a tourist product.

Some of the problems detected include the lack of control in recent constructions, the excessive occupation of plots to build rooms and garages, all this added to the modification of the architectonic codes that predominate in the houses built with a traditional style.

In addition, the list includes the lack of basic services and drinkable water, and the free pouring of liquid waste that thwarts hygiene and healthcare.

As part of the program it was completed the restoration of Don Tomás House, they are working in the church and in the Community Cultural Center and expect to repair streets, bus stops, the street lighting and signs.
