2011.06.14 - 16:45:30 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. HAVANA, CUBA.-  Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta and Spanish Tamara Rojo, both of the Royal Ballet of London, will perform “Romeo and Juliet” on June 17-19 at the O2 stadium in London.

In statements to BBC, Acosta said that although the stadium is not the ideal place to stage a ballet -the arena has a capacity for 12,000 people-, it is important to the dance company because it can reach a bigger audience.

According to Acosta there are new audiences to educate as to what the ballet is, and how wonderful it is, and stressed that this will be the right moment to do that.

“The company is looking good, casting is strong and the excitement is going to be there," Acosta told BBC.

Despite the venue’s snags, the public will be able to appreciate a colorful and special ballet, remarked the dancer, who is also a leading dancer of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba.

Acosta referred to how popular ballet is in Cuba and noted that it is not elitist as it is everywhere and it is even played on TV.

This will be the first the Royal Ballet stages Romeo and Juliet in an UK stadium.

Announcing the production last year, company director Dame Monica Mason said she was "thrilled" about the production being shown in such a huge venue as it would "introduce our work to so many new people," according to BBC’s article.

Acosta’s talent and virtuosity on stage has been widely recognized. Earlier this year, he was awarded the National Dance Prize in Cuba, becoming the youngest recipient of the prize.
