The organizing committee for the 2012 London Olympics officially presented the Olympic torch on Wednesday.

The torch carrying the Olympic flame is one of the most well-known and relevant symbols of the Games, said Sebastian Coe, president of the organizing committee.

The 2012 London Olympic torch, designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, weighs 800 grams and has 8,000 holes that represent the number of bearers it will have during a 13,000-kilometer journey to the inauguration ceremony.

The triangular shape of the torch symbolizes the three times the British capital has staged the Summer Olympics (1908, 1948, and 2012).

According to Coe, the flame will arrive from Greece on May, 2012, and will pass through the hands of thousands of bearers before lighting up the cauldron in the opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium on July 27, 2012.
