Havana, Cuba, Jun 8.- Cuba hopes to sell four million boxes of the Havana Club rum around the world in 2011 in spite of a recent decision by the U.S. Federal Court of Appeals not to renovate a license to sell this product in U.S. territory.

The president of the Cuba Ron Corporation, Juan Gonzalez Escalona, told ACN that Washington’s Federal Court of Appeals last April decided not to renovate the registration of the trademark that Cuba acquired in the United States in 1976, in virtue of the economic blockade imposed by the U.S. Government on the Caribbean nation for almost 50 years.

Gonzalez announced that a serious marketing campaign is underway to increase the sales of the Havana Club rum in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Meanwhile, Arian Remedios Ortega, a specialist with the joint venture Havana Club International S.A., noted that the company is working on a strategy to defend the brand in the cyberspace.

He explained that actions include warning Internet surfers about possible counterfeit products.

According to date provided by Havana Club International S.A., Havana Club places fourth in the world regarding its annual growth of sales —over 14.9%—, only behind Absolut (vodka), Johnny Walker and Jameson.

In 2010, 3.8 million boxes (of nine litters each) of Havana Club were sold, mainly in Europe (57%) and Cuba (31%).

The product is currently registered in 186 countries.(ACN)
