CIENFUEGOS, CUBA.- The Cuban Council of Ministers proposed the National System of Protected Areas to include in them the highest peak in the central region of Cuba, Pico San Juan, which is located in the Guamuhaya Mountains.

A specialist from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in the central province of Cienfuegos, Julia Coba Mir, explained that the peak, 1,140 meters above sea level, shelters important species of the Cuban flora and fauna.

The areas of Yaguanabo Arriba and the territory between Gavilan and Guajimico ––the latter hosts an endemic plant of the island, the Alcalypha Hutchinsonii Britton, commonly known as Cat Tail–– were also included in the proposal.

Coba noted that experts are identifying the most representative natural resources of each environment in order to support the proposal and are implementing sustainable techniques as well as preservation and environmental education actions.

She mentioned that they are rescuing the Cave Martin Infierno, a natural patrimony that treasures one of the biggest stalagmites in the world, 67,20 meters tall.

The director of a CITMA institution for environmental management, Nelson Castro, asserted that biodiversity is promoted in these places by keeping the balance between man and nature.

Up to the present day, Cienfuegos only possesses one protected area which is a fauna refuge called Laguna Guanaroca, the habitat of about 24 endemic bird species like the Cuban Trogon, the Green Woodpecker, and the Cuban Tody, along with an abundant population of pink flamingos.
