2011.06.03 - 22:00:32 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Havana, Cuba.- The Cuban delegation to the upcoming 2011 Pan American Games, scheduled for next October in Guadalajara, Mexico, will include nearly 400 athletes, as announced on Thursday by the president of the Cuban Olympic Committee (COC), Jose Ramon Fernandez.

“We will attend the event with our best athletes. We want to participate with a little over 400 athletes, of whom 300 have already qualified and some others have already attained the minimum marks requested by the organizers,” said Fernandez at the end of the General Assembly of the COC in Havana.

The head of the sport organization noted that Cuba hopes to finish in the second place of the medal standings as it has done since 1971 in Cali, Colombia, —except for 1991, when, as hosts, the Cuban athletes managed to relegate the U.S. representatives to the runner-up position.

“We are working hard with that goal in mind. We are on the right track, although, today, nothing can be taken for granted because everyone prepares very well for the competition,” Fernandez noted.
