Cuba hosted its first-ever international Bridge tournament, as teams from 20 nations in the Caribbean and Central America faced off at Cuba Bridge 2011 in hotels in Havana and Varadero May 20-28.

The Cuban event was a qualifier for the Bermuda Bowl world championships, to be held in the Netherlands in October. None of the Cuban pairs was able to advance to the finals.

A driving force behind the event in Cuba was Emma Castro Ruz, one of the three younger sisters of Fidel and Raúl Castro, Mexican magazine Esto reported. Emma Castro is the president of the Cuban Bridge association, which joined the World Bridge Federation last year.

Bridge aspires to become an Olympic discipline.
