2011-05-30. La Habana (Agenzia Fides) - On the occasion of the 33rd General Assembly of the Council of Latin American Bishops, which has just ended in Montevideo (Uruguay), two Cuban Bishops, Monsignor Emilio Aranguren, bishop of Holguin, and Auxiliary Bishop of Havana, Juan de Dios Hernandez, said in an interview to the Uruguayan newspaper La Republica, released by the CNA: "The country is moving in a different way than before, and this could be a sign of progress and a new way of governing."

Mgr. Hernandez said that in Cuba there is only one political party, but in a democratic state we need different political parties. Five years ago there was no possibility of expressing different opinions, but today yes, and the comments of other individuals or groups are taken into account. "Both the bishops noted that there are, gradual changes in the country. The Auxiliary Bishop of Havana, said among other things:"

I think in the future the Church will have a better chance of being present in those areas that are part of its mission and where a greater presence is required. "The Catholic Church in fact is not a political party "but" is in the service of the people. "The Cuban government officials appear to have realized" the importance of spiritual values which the Church has for the people, "concluded Mgr.Hernandez. (PA)  (Agenzia Fides 30/05/2011)
