Cuba: Growing number of private stores selling building materials as part of economic opening

ap. On Monday May 23, 2011, 12:44 pm EDT. HAVANA (AP) -- Cuba says more than 1,000 independent shops have opened around the country to sell unsubsidized building materials.

Communist Party newspaper Granma said Monday that the new shops give Cubans access to building supplies without having to wade through a tangled government bureaucracy.

The government has long controlled nearly all construction under Cuba's socialist economy, and many people turn to the black market for quicker repairs.

The country has legalized independent sales in hopes of curbing corruption, eliminating expensive government underwriting of building materials and helping to ease a severe housing crisis.
